Tajikistan marks International Mine Action Day

Tajikistan is organizing events dedicated to International Mine Action Day or the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action today. The International Mine Action Day is held globally on April 4.

Parviz Mavlonqulov from the Tajik Mine Action Cell (TMAC) says an exhibition dedicated to the work that has been carried out so far in ridding Tajikistan of land mines will open at the Kokhi Somon in Dushanbe today afternoon. “Representatives from Tajik ministries and organizations as well as representative from international organizations and diplomatic missions active in Tajikistan have been invited to the exhibition,” said Mavlonqulov, “Visiting UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is also expected to attend this exhibition.” Continue reading

Turkmenistan intensifies campaign against drug abuse among youth

Turkmenistan holds “purposeful measures to prevent harmful habits damaging health and especially, such negative phenomena as drug addiction” among the Turkmen youth, Chairman of the Turkmen Central Council of Makhtumkuli Youth Organization Mamed Khojaguliyev said at the governmental meeting.

President Gurbangulu Berdimuhammedov emphasized that it is necessary to consolidate efforts of the entire society in the fight against drugs and drug addiction, as it is the only way to put a reliable barrier to this dangerous social evil.

Turkmenistan is adjacent to Afghanistan, from whose territory drugs are actively transported to markets, including Europe, UN reported.

Material and technical base of the state customs and border services, and law enforcement agencies are systematically and consistently reinforced in Turkmenistan. The country annually holds open activities on the destruction of seized narcotic drugs.

UN’s Ban calls vanishing Aral Sea ‘shocking disaster’

The drying up of the Aral Sea is one of the planet’s most shocking environmental disasters, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said as he urged Central Asian leaders to step up efforts to solve the problem.

Once the world’s fourth-largest lake, the sea has shrunk by 90 per cent since the rivers that feed it were largely diverted in a Soviet project to boost cotton production in the arid region. Continue reading

Turkmenistan marks holiday “Drop of water – grain of gold”

Turkmenistan, 80 percent of whose territory is occupied by the Karakum Desert, marks, according to a tradition, the holiday “Drop of water – grain of gold” on the first Sunday of April.

Mass festivities where workers of water conservancy are lauded and show biz men perform, are staged on banks of rivers and lakes, near fountains in parks and public gardens in Ashgabat and regional centers this Sunday. Continue reading

Tashkent Photo Exhibition Welcomes Navruz at Uzbek Embassy

The Embassy of the Republic of Uzbekistan to the UK hosted a delightful evening of celebrations for the occasion of Navruz on 25th March in London. An eclectic crowd of Uzbeks, other Central Asians, interested academics, media and business contacts mingled with drinks and a selection of national food. The event was kindly hosted by the Ambassador of the Republic of Uzbekistan and Mrs Otabek Akbarov.
