The sky is the limit!
Why do many foreigners who’ve lived in the UK for many years never reach an advanced level in their English? Often, as a result, they mix mainly with their fellow countrymen and feel like outsiders. What are the tools for bringing their English speech to the highest possible level?
Olga Smith, author of a new books, Get Rid of Your Accent, is a native Russian who’s been living in the UK for the past 13 years. Having studied linguistics at a Russian university she has used this more fundamental system, which is more demanding, and helps achieve real results.
In comparison, the methods of language teaching in the UK are rather different and focus on listening to the radio; watching TV; writing short, primitive essays; and reading books. There is rarely anything that helps develop speech, which is active knowledge.
On her personal experiences, Olga Smith recalls, “When I asked how I could improve my pronunciation and soften my accent, they would say: ”Oh, your pronunciation is good, it’s not important to reduce your accent!” One day I recorded myself, and to my astonishment, even I couldn’t understand what I was saying.
