On June 24, 2011 AIRC “America Borboru”, Kant American Corner and American Music Center conducted “ACKG marathon” giving out publications, books and brochures in order to spread out a word about American Corners and Centers in Kyrgyzstan, its resources and programs.

The event was conducted at the Alley of youth (downtown Bishkek) the space between two major universities Kyrgyz National University and International University in Kyrgyzstan. Mineral Mining Software Giant to Open Almaty Office

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 – Global mining software giant Gemcom Software International will open an office in Kazakhstan on Friday to capitalize on the fast-growing mining industries in Central Asia, the company said on Tuesday.

Rio Tinto Plans to Find Next Central Asian Giant Copper Deposit

Wednesday, June 22, 2011 – Multinational mining group Rio Tinto expects to discover the next gigantic copper deposit in Central Asia and is prepared to back up its dream with money, the company said in an interview published on Wednesday.

The British-Australian company plans to begin drilling at multiple copper targets in Uzbekistan before the year’s end and is trying to tie down a separate deal to explore several potential areas in Kazakhstan, a top company official told the Reuters news agency.

“We firmly believe that [in Uzbekistan] there are multiple copper prospects that are of high caliber and untested, so we’ll be looking to build a portfolio of two or three projects,” said Chris Welton, Rio Tinto’s general manager for exploration in Central Asia. Continue reading

Kazzinc competing for Tajik silver deposit contract

Thursday, June 23, 2011 – A Kazakh and an Australian mining company are competing for a silver deposit in Tajikistan after three Chinese companies bailed out of negotiations, a Tajik government official said on Wednesday.

Kazzinc, a Kazakh miner and producer of lead, copper and zinc, is leading a consortium that is contending against BHP Billiton, the world’s biggest mining company by revenue, for the largest silver deposit in Tajikistan.

Rahmonbek Bakhtdavlatov, first deputy chief of the state agency for geology, said he expects the government to award a license to develop the Konimansuri Kalon field before year’s end, the Reuters news agency reported. Continue reading

Construction of power transmission lines is one target project for the fund Thursday, June 23, 2011 – Kazakhstan’s national welfare fund Samruk-Kazyna is planning to invest in the economy of its southern neighbor Kyrgyzstan, the fund’s deputy chair said on Thursday.

“We are ready now to hire people who look for an office, because it is a very important initiative for development cooperation and the use of export potential of Kyrgyzstan,” the Kabar.kg news agency reported Samruk-Kazyna Deputy Chairman Aidan Karibzhanov as saying in the Kyrgyz capital Bishkek on Thursday. Regional Integration Studies Programme of the EDB Technical Assistance Fund

The EDB Technical Assistance Fund invites researchers to bid for the publication of their individual or collective monographs. The purpose of this competition is to promote academic or applied studies pertaining to the urgent issues of socioeconomic and political development of CIS countries in the context of the ongoing and prospective integration initiatives.

Eligible bidders should be nationals of CIS countries. Bids can be submitted by individuals or research teams (2-4 persons). Studies must pertain to one of the following subjects:

— regional integration in trade and industry;

— infrastructure integration;

— financial integration; or
