Colors of the Oasis: Central Asian Ikats at the Textile Museum in Washington

    September 3rd, 2010

Murad Megalli’s fine collection of ikat textiles and garments will go on show for the first time at the Textile Museum in Washington this autumn. The collection, donated to the museum over the last five years, comprises a diverse array of nineteenth-century ikats, and the exhibition will place these in their socio-economic context as well as teaching the visitor about the production of ikat historically and today. The exhibition looks set to be another ikat blockbuster, and associated events, including an opening symposium, will add to its appeal. Click on the chapan (above left) to find out more… and don’t forget that Steppe 6 had a guide to ikat, it’s history and current production, and Steppe 8 will have a full review of the exhibition.

Colors of the Oasis: Central Asian Ikats, The Textile Museum, 2320 S Street, NW, Washington DC, 20008 from 16 October 2010 to 13 March 2011

    Afghanistan Observed in Herat

    September 3rd, 2010

This exhibition reflects the observations of European visitors to Afghanistan between 1830 and 1920 – a period during which Afghans’ relations with the outside world was critical not only for the country and region, but for the superpowers at the time.

The exhibition features 150 prints that relate to the history and culture of Afghanistan, selected from the collections of the British Library and including drawings by Charles Masson, watercolours by James Atkinson and photographs by John Burke. The exhibition opened in Kabul in April and is currently showing in the Chahar Suq in Herat.
