The Nukus Musem, or the Karakalpakstan State Museum of Art in Nukus, Uzbekistan, is also known as the Savitsky Museum. It owes its name to the presence of the second largest collection of the Russian avant-garde in the world, which is represented by the work of Igor Savitsky, a prominent Russian artist. This year the museum remembers the 25th anniversary of Savitsky’s passing. A program of selected events, supported by the Friends of Nukus Museum (FoNM), will exhibit a wide variety of the Savitsky Collection to Nukus citizens and its visitors, with a view to promoting a better knowledge about Karakalpakstan and its cultural heritage.
With the ongoing support of FoNM, the museum will organise a series of events exploring Savitsky’s Collection and the Karakalpakstan region. The exhibition includes presentations on Karakalpak folk art, a collection of the Cosmos movement (named after the explorations of the space theme by Russian painters), Savitsky’s unseen graphics, paintings and other items, as well as two evening presentations on the 20th century archeological expeditions and discoveries in Central Asia. There will be also outdoor excursions such as a five-day field trip to Nukus and the environs of Karakalpakstan.
