IINA, May 28, 2011
ASTANA (Kazakhstan), 25 Jumada 2/May 28 (IINA)-Chairing the Organization for the Islamic Conference (OIC) will be another high point for Kazakhstan on the international stage, Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev said on Wednesday.
“The presidency in the OIC that unites all Muslims in the world will raise Kazakhstan’s prestige in the Islamic world,” the Trend news agency quoted Nazarbayev as telling the Fourth World Kurultai of Kazakhs in the Kazakh capital Astana.
“The presidency in the OIC that has 57 member states puts an enormous responsibility on us.”
Kazakhstan is due to take over the helm of the OIC at the end of June.
In related news, Kazakhstan chaired a high-level OIC meeting in Saudi Arabia last week, the Gazeta.kz news agency reported on Monday.
The Senior Officials Meeting, held in the Saudi city Jeddah, drew up a raft of resolutions to be considered by the top-level meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers in Kazakhstan, the Kazakh-based Gazeta news agency reported on Monday.
Kazakhstan will assume the presidency of the group at the conclusion of the June 28-30 meeting in Astana.
The OIC presidency is currently held by Tajikistan.
The Jeddah discussions held under the chairmanship of Kazakh Deputy Foreign Minister Kairat Umarov resulted in a resolution for regional coordination in the battle against drug trafficking from Afghanistan.
The three-day Senior Officials Meeting, which is second in importance to the Council of Foreign Ministers, also penned a draft resolution to support Astana’s attempts to better coordinate work of the OIC with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), which Kazakhstan chaired in 2010.
The diplomats also discussed topics including religious defamation, disarmament, human rights in Muslim nations, conflicts between OIC member states and the fight against terrorism.
OIC is the second largest intergovernmental organization after the United Nations.
