In this lecture, Prof. Stéphane Dudoignon will present the results of his recently completed study about the Islamic personnel of Soviet Central Asia. Using the example of the Tajik Soviet Socialist Republic, the author will assess some fundamental issues of research on this period of history. As a specialist in the history of Islam in Central Asia, he will reflect on the development of hagiographic production and the constructions of religious categories, especially under the Soviet Union. Dudoignon will review documents from various fields and engage with oral inquiries as well as with various written documents. He will reflect on the ongoing hagiographic process in the field of Central Asian Islam. The presentation will engage with typologies of sacredness inherited from the Soviet period..

The Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin/Germany is organizing a series of presentations in the academic year 2010/2011 on “Islam and Society in Central Asia” (Islam und Gesellschaft in Zentralasien). This series of talks concentrates on the social and cultural role of Islam in the region, its dynamics and many facets in post-soviet Central Asia. The series addresses the relationship between state and religion and the role of Islam for the development of political identities. With presentations by experts from Central Asia and Europe, we aim to stimulate a discussion about the plurality of Islamic cultures and societies. Our next speaker will be Dr. Alikhan Baimenov.
